About
Quick facts: Walking among towering Corinthian columns, you can sense the scale and hear hollow echoes underfoot that hint at past ceremonies and imperial pageantry. Remarkably, 104 columns once surrounded the site and rose about 17 meters high, yet only around 15 remain standing, making the vast gaps feel surprisingly cinematic.
Highlights: A forest of 104 Corinthian columns originally surrounded the temple, each about 17 meters tall and 2 meters in diameter. Today 15 of those fluted Pentelic marble pillars still stand, sunlight slicing between them so you can trace faint chisel marks in the stone. Local guides point out that the Roman emperor Hadrian completed construction around 131 CE and placed a colossal statue, so if you press your ear to a column, you can almost imagine festival drums and bronze clashing from more than 1,800 years ago.
Insider tips
- Wear sturdy shoes, the site is uneven and fully exposed to sun.
- Arrive at opening to beat tour groups and enjoy soft morning light for photos.
- Stand on the south-side pedestrian walkway for framed shots of the columns with the Acropolis behind them.
- Combine the visit with Hadrian's Arch and the National Gardens to save walking time and get historical context.
